Pre-1998 Srpska Republika (Serbian area) plates. These plates were issued in the Serb-controlled part of the country. They are in the older Yugoslavian style, but using Cyrillic letters.

Upper plate: Normal series plate. БЛ = Banja Luka. After the letters is the old Serb shield.

Lower plate: Army plate.

Pre-1998 Herceg Bosna (Croatian area) plates. These plates were issued in the Croat controlled part of the country.

Upper plate: Normal series plate, MO = Mostar.

Lower plate: Army plate.
Pre-1998 Muslim area plate. SA = Sarajevo. These plates were issued in the Muslim controlled part of the country.

1998-2009 unified series. To prevent discrimination or even attacks on drivers based on the ethnic region the car is registered in, a new unified plate system was introduced, replacing all previous issues. The number is simply serial with no regional coding.
2009 onwards unified series.
